Plot
Three main events are shown as a sign of the coming Ragnarok.
The first will be the birth of Loki’s and Angrboda (a Giantess) three children. They are Jormungand (a giant serpent), Fenrir(a giant wolf), and Hel(the ruler of the underworld).
The second will be the death of Baldr and the Binding of the god Loki.
The final event will be the coming of Fimbulvetr.
Because Loki was sealed in Midgard, the place where mortals dwelled, his evil has spread through Midgard and influenced the minds and hearts of humans and corrupting them. Because Baldr was dead, there was no one to keep the mortal world in check. Over time, the mortals/humans waged war against each other until only the most barbaric survived.
Next, the time of Fimbulvetr . Three consecutive winters struck the land of Midgard, snow coming from all directions turning this once beautiful world into a snowy wasteland. Here the last of mankind will die because in a frozen solitude and others of hunger.
Afterwards, the wolves Skoll and Hati, will devour Sol(sun) and Mani(moon), turning Midgard into an eternally dark world. Now, with the darkness, magical bonds throughout the world were being shattered. As a result, Loki was freed alongside his son Fenrir ready to take revenge upon the Aesir for binding them both. At this moment Gullinkambi screeched as a signal of the start of Ragnarok.
Heimdall, one of the only Aesir to hear the signal blew the horn Gjallar, alerting the Aesir (Gods of Asgard) to prepare for battle.
Both sides, the Aesir and the Giants, assembled ready to wage war upon each other.
The Aesir had consisted of Odin, Heimdall, Thor, Freyj, Vidar, and other einherjar(warriors of Asgard).
The Giants had consisted of Loki, Hel, Jormungand, Surt, Fenrir and their minions.
Both sides had attacked each other turning the whole world into a giant battlefield. Whether it was Thor vs. Jormungand or Odin vs. Fenrir, almost everyone had perished in this bloody battle. In the end, the Flame giant Surt was one of the very few others who survived and engulfed the whole world in flames destroying himself as well. Everything will have sunk into the sea.
However, this is not the end, after the fire of Surt has died down, a new land will rise from the sea and two humans Lif and Lifthrasi, who had survived the aftermath by hiding in the branches of the sacred tree Yggdrasil, shall repopulate the mortal world, whereas, the very few gods who survived Ragnarok will start the rebirth of the immortals.
Moral/Purpose of the Myth
The moral of Ragnarok is that everything will come to an end good or bad. However, something new is always born from that loss.
Relevance to Society
In the world, past and present, there are times when war is inevitable. For example in World War II, many countries were being dragged into this fight due to circumstances, such as America with Pearl Harbor. In these wars, land will be destroyed and families will be torn apart. Whole countires face emotional and physical ruin. An example of this are the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki after being bombed by America.
